Properties Post


Properties covered so far:

Make a real-life example not shown in the videos you've seen for each property above. You will receive one point for each appropriate example. Make sure to include both of your names. Good luck, and be creative!

  2. There is two inks. Red and a blue ink. And there is a cup. The first try, you first pour in the red ink and then blue ink. Then, on the second try, you pour in the blue first and red ink second. But its still turns out as a purple ink, which is a commutative property of addition.

    There are three people, A, B, and C. First, A and B went together to the park. However, B felt said for C, so he ditched A and went with C, which is the associative property of addition.

    There was a identical twin born. And they both have everything the same, including their appearance their personality. So the twins are equal, which is the reflexive property of equality.

    I'm a human and Cindy is a human, so we are equal. And since Cindy is a human and I am a human, we are equal, which is the symmetric property of equality.

    Water and salt together can be only be salt water, but not a sugar water, which is the closure property,

    Elephant and lion are equal since they are animals. Lions and penguins are equal since they are equal. So elephants and penguins are equal since they are animals. And that is a transitive property.

    There are three friends, A, B, and C. A tries to throw a tomato at B, but its unfair to not throw at C. So A throw a tomato to B and C each. Which is a distributive property.

    A pencil case without pencils equals a pencil case. No pencil in pencil case is a pencil case. It is a identity property.

    Cindy throws a ball up high to 6m. And it comes down, which is same as 0m since it came back down. And this is property of opposites.

    A and B are brothers, and they have a debt because of his father. And since they are going to live separately now, they have to divide the debt for each brothers, and this is the property of opposite of a sum.

    Properties Blog Assignment

    Commutative
    You have to mix 2 colors to make purple. You can mix blue and red or red and blue[a+b=b+a] Because the order you mix the two colors doesn’t matter it’s commutative.

    Associative
    There are three friends getting into the car. The car doesn’t have enough seats, so one person has to sit in the front while the other two sit in the back. First, I sat in the front and my two friends sat in the back. The next time, my friend sat in the front and I sat in the back with my other friend.

    Reflexive
    An eraser is an eraser[a=a] Even if it becomes smaller by erasing, it’s still an eraser.

    Symmetric
    If my chair is the same as Alex’s chair, Alex’s chair is also the same as mine[a=b, b=a]

    Closure
    If you mix blue and green it has to become green no matter what

    Transitive
    If my textbook is the same as Alex’s textbook and Brian’s textbook, then Alex and Brian’s textbooks are the same too[a=b, a=c, b=c]

    Distributive
    Two students go up to the teacher together to ask him a question. The teacher tells both of them the answer at the same time. Then, one student comes up by himself to ask a question and the teacher answers. The other student asks the same question separately to the teacher again[a(b+c)=(ab)+(ac)]

    Identity
    First, you were going to play by yourself. Then, you ask your friend if they want to play with you. They say no, so you are playing by yourself again[a+0=a]

    Property of Opposites
    There was a flood, so the water level rose to 100m above sea level. Then, there was a drought and the water level decreased 100m so the water went back to sea level which is 0[a+9-a)=0]

    Property of Opposite of a Sum
    Bob and Jill got after school detention together. Later on, Bob got detention in the morning, and Jill got detention in the afternoon.[-(a+b)=(-a)+(-b)] They ended up meeting at after school detention anyway.

    1. Good reflexive property example! I like your Opposite of a Sum example too.
      Associative: Everyone has to go to the park for this to be true. And A, B, and C? I know you can be more creative than that.
      Distributive property should show that throwing tomatoes at them together or separately yields the same result.
      Opposites: What are the opposites here? I'm confused.

    Commutative Property
    Hercules fought with two monsters, the Cretan Bull and the Lernean Hydra. First he fights with the Cretan Bull and then the Lernean Hydra, but they both didn’t die so Hercules fought them again, this time with the order of fighting Lernean Hydra and then the Cretan Bull. Both of them are dead now!

    Associative Property
    Three teachers, Mr. Jobe, Ms. Lee, and Mr. Forrestal go to the movies and watch two movies, Batman and Spiderman. They sit by height order in both of the movies (Mr. Jobe, Ms. Lee, Mr. Forrestal). In the first movie, Mr. Jobe and Ms. Lee eat a bag of popcorn together and Mr. Forrestal eats alone. In the second movie, Mr. Jobe eats alone and Ms. Lee and Mr. Forrestal eat together. They still eat popcorns in each movies!

    Reflexive Property
    First, Mr. Patrick wears short pants. Second, he wears high heels. Even though he wears something different, he is still Mr. Patrick.

    Symmetric Property
    In Science Class, if Group A’s Data is the same as Group B’s Data, then Group B’s Data will be the same is Group A’s Data.

    Closure Property
    A male dog and a female dog meets and gets a baby. After the baby is born, the baby is dog, not something else.

    Transitive Property
    Mr. Forrestal’s Hair is bald which is the same as Mr. Evan’s hair which is also bald. Mr. Evan’s hair is same as Mr. O’Connor’s hair which are also bald too. Then, Mr. Forrestal’s hair and Mr. O’Connor’s hair are the same too, Bald!

    Distributive Property
    On Monday, Bob bought both Max and Eric an energy bar at the same time. The next day, Bob bought Brain and Eric an energy bar separately.

    Identity Property
    Mr. Jobe gave out candies for his Algebra Class. Christina got 1 candy but she wanted more so she asked Mr. Jobe but he said no. So, she just ended up with 1 candy.

    Property of Opposites
    Alex went golfing. In the first round, he scored 7 under par. In the second round, he scored 7 over par. His total score was 0, since -7 and 7 are opposites and the sum of a number and its opposite is a 0.

    Property of Opposite of a Sum
    The two twins, Jennifer and Kimberly slept together in one bed and both caught a cold because they slept with a window open in a winter night. The next winter, Kimberly and Jennifer slept by themselves with the window open so they both got a cold again.

  6. Commutative :
    You can put carrots first then mushrooms, and put mushrooms first then carrots to make the same soup.

    Associative :
    I played soccer and basketball on monday and played tennis on tuesday. Next week, I played soccer on monday and played basketball and tennis on tuesday

    Reflexive :
    There’s a rock. The next day, it’s still a rock

    Symmetric :
    Apple is a fruit and a banana is also a fruit, so they are equally fruits. Banana is a fruit and an apple is also a fruit, so they are equally fruits.

    Closure :
    There was 200ml of water in the cup. Then Mr. Jobe pour 100ml of water into the cup again. Now there are 300ml of water in the cup.

    Transitive :
    Mr. Jobe and Kimberly are humans - Kimberly and David are humans - David and Mr. Jobe are humans

    Distributive :
    Last year, Cindy and Brian gave a presents to Mr. Jobe together. This year, they gave a present to Mr. Jobe separately.

    Identity :
    Yesterday, I put a p.e shoe in the locker, and today I put nothing in the locker. Tomorrow there would only be a p.e shoe in the locker

    Property of Opposites :
    I have $5, and I owe Christina $5. After giving Christina $5, I have no money left

    Property of Opposite of a Sum :
    The robber steals 2 shirts from the pile of shirts in one mall. Next day, the robber steals 1 shirt each from 2 malls. The robber steals 2 shirts everyday in either way

    • Commutative-Kevin and Joy are standing in line trying to go to the library. Joy is standing in front of Kevin. It doesn’t matter if Kevin switches places with Joy since they’re both going to the library.

    Associative- There are 3 pizzas and 3 people Jennifer,Joy,and Kevin. It doesn’t matter if Joy and Jennifer eat pizza together and Kevin eats alone or when Joy eats alone and Jennifer and Kevin eat together.

    Reflexive-Kevin with glasses and Kevin without glasses is the same Kevin.

    Symmetric-There is a shirt that sells in Ak plaza. The same shirt sells in Lotte Department too. “A” is the shirt in Ak Plaza and “B” is the shirt in Lotte Department. Even though they’re selling in two different places, they’re still the same shirt.

    Closure- There is Joy and Jennifer in math class. If the door is closed only Joy and Jennifer is in math class, but when the door is open Kevin and Alex can come in too.

    Transitive-Jennifer and Joy have the same shirt. Kevin has the same shirt as Joy. So Kevin and Jennifer have the same shirt.

    Distributive-A bear has two fishes and two bowls. She puts a fish in each bowl. So each bowl has one fish each.

    Identity- Even hough a macbook has an invisible case you can still see the macbook.

    Properly of opposites-Joy wrote a letter on the paper and she erased it later so the paper is blank.

    Property of opposites of sum- Kevin and Joy leaving the math class is the same as Joy and Kevin leaving the math class alone. Leaving the math class is negative because it’s sad leaving math class.

  8. Commutative Property:
    Jadyn listens to music using earphones. Then she switches earbuds from left to right, just for fun.

    Associative Property:
    In the soccer field, there is Christine, Jadyn, and Kimberly. On the first half of the game, Jadyn and Kimberly both score, goals. On the second half of the game, Christine scores a goal. The next jamboree, Jadyn scored a goal on the first half. Kimberly and Christine scores goals on the second half of the game.

    Reflexive Property:
    Jadyn kicks the soccer ball into the net, and scores! Then, she takes the soccer ball out of the net. The soccer ball she kicked is the same one as she took out of the net.

    Symmetric Property:
    Jadyn owns one Algebra textbook and Christine also owns one Algebra textbook. So, they both own the same kind of textbook.

    Closure Property:
    Christine filled a bottle with water. Then she went to the cafeteria for ice to put into the bottle which makes ice water in a bottle.

    Transitive Property:
    The soccer field and Christine’s jacket are both green. Also, Jadyn’s computer case is the same color as Christine’s jacket, which means that the soccer field is the same color as Jadyn’s computer case.

    Distributive Property:
    Christine and Jadyn both receive their grades from Mr. Jobe. They both got A’s, yay!!! Then the next year, Christine gets an A, again and in a different block, Jadyn receives her grade, which was an A also. So, even if they are not together when they are receiving their grades, they both still get an A!!

    Identity Property of Addition:
    On Tuesday, Christine played 3 soccer games, and on Thursday it rained, so she played no games that day. The total amount of games she played in the whole week is 3.

    Property of Opposites:
    Christine was on a game show where there were 2 questions. The first question she got right so she got 3 points, but then the next question she got wrong so they took away 3 points. She ended up with the same score as she started with before the game (0).

    Property of Opposites of a Sum:
    A thief steals Christine and Jadyn’s ID cards while they were talking, having the lockers open. So, they make a new ID card. The next day, the same thief steals Christine’s ID card on the 3rd floor, runs up, and then steals Jadyn’s ID card.

    Commutative - 3 prisoners were waiting for their execution. The order of execution was Prisoner A, B, C but prisoner B and C were so eager to die first. So they decided to execute Prisoner B, C first and then A.

    Associative - There were 3 Mardi Gras parades: Krewe of Bacchus, Krewe of Zulu, and Krewe of Rex. This year both Krewe of Bacchus and Zulu decided to cross the French Quarter and Krewe of Rex was passing by Metairie. The next year Krewe of Bacchus passed by Metairie but Zulu and Rex went by the French Quarter.

    Reflexive property of Equality - A wanted criminal was constantly being chased by cops. To hide his face, the criminal decided to have plastic surgery done to his face. After the surgery, the criminal was still the criminal.

    Symmetric - Kate tied her hair and put on purple make-up and she looked in the mirror. The Kate in the mirror is the same as the Kate looking into the mirror.

    Closure - Jay had to back-up 3.74GB of memory onto his blue flash drive. Later he downloaded more applications and had to back up for his new applications on a green flash drive. Later he had 4GB of memory that he backed-up in total.

    Transitive - During music class, Dr.Kang gave the celli and violins the same part. The she gave the double basses and the celli the same part.

    Distributive - Clare’s familly had arranged a vacation. Clare had to send an email out to her teachers that she was missing class. She typed in 7 people into the “Receiver” section. Then she wrote an email and sent it. She distributed an email to 7 different teachers.

    Identity property of addition - JWL had $60. He needed more money to buy a new macbook, so he decided to earn some money an easy and fast way. He saw a sixth grader walking down the hall and saw his chance. He attacked the sixth grader only to find that he carried no money. At the end of the day he still had $60.

    Property of opposites - Mr. Jobe gave Alex a pop quiz! There were two questions each worth 5points. Alex got the first one correct, but he got the second one wrong. He ended up with the score of 0.

    Property of opposite of a sum - Mr. Jobe recieved 2 flowers for teachers’ day. He put them into a vase and they both died. The next teachers’ day, he recieved 2 flowers from the same students and he put them in 2 different vases. They both died again.fail....... flowers hate him.

  10. Commutative: There were 5 rabbits on the farm. 2 bears from the neighborhood farm came to play. Therefore there are 7 animals on the farm. The next day, the 2 bears invited the 7 rabbits to their farm to play. Therefore, the first day it was 5+2=7 and the next day it was 2+5=7

    Associative: (a+b)+c = a+ (b+c)
    a= mouse
    b= cat
    c= dog
    Mouse and cat was already in tiger’s b day party and then the dog came in later so now 3 animals.
    (a+b)+c
    Mouse (just alone) came first to tiger’s b day party and then cat and dog came in later. So now 3 animals again.
    a+(b+c)

    Reflexive: Polly was looking at herself in the mirror and was bragging about how pretty she was. No matter what she did, she still looked pretty to herself.

    Symmetric property: a=b, b=a
    Tom was buying apples in a supermarket. He bought one red apple and one green apple. He did not realise that they were different colors but he did not care as they are just APPLES.
    a= red apple
    b= green apple
    red apple= green apple, green apple= red apple
    apple is apple, the colors are just different

    Closure: ab= unique real number
    Holly had two different sources.
    a= ketchup b= mayonnaise
    She wondered what would happen if she mixed those two together. Now, she created a unique source which is “Kayonese”

    Transitive: a=b b=c a=c
    a = pen
    b= textbook
    c= chair

    Pen is the same color as the textbook which is orange and the textbook is the same color as the chair which means the pen is the same color as the chair.

    Distributive:

    There were 3 friends went on a school trip. They were happily walking together when another friend each gave them 5 pieces of candy. They each have 5 candies each.

    5(1 + 1 +1) = 5 + 5 + 5


    Identity: Mr. Jobe bragged that he was too handsome. No matter what he did, he still looked handsome to himself. J = J


    Property of opposites: Yumi had a chocolate bar, but her mom took it away from her so now she has 0 chocolate bar.

    Property of opposite of a sum: On Monday I lost 2 pens in one class. On Tuesday I lost 2 pens in two different classes. I lose 2 pens each day.

      Identity property: so true. I'm glad you think so. :)
      Distributive: Almost, but not quite. Now give a scenario where they are receiving the candy individually, and they still all have the same amount.

  11. Commutative :
    On Saturday Mr. Jobe watches the rerun of The Avengers first. Then Mr. Jobe watches the rerun of Iron Man.
    The next day, Mr. Jobe watches the rerun of Iron Man first, then watches the rerun of The Avengers.

    Associative :
    Kimberly makes a bacon apple cheese burger. You add the apples and the bacon first on top of the bread then later add the cheese. But Sebin wants to add the apples separately then the bacon and cheese together.

    Reflexive :
    Alex shaved his hair and now is bald, even though Alex shaved his hair, Alex is still Alex.

    Symmetric :
    Mr. Jobe owns a farm and has a cow and a horse. If cow is the same size as the horse then, the horse is the same size as the cow.

    Closure :
    In Ms. Inman’s art class, Jennifer took a tube of red paint and blue paint and mixed them together and it came out as purple paint. **paint + paint = paint

    Transitive :
    If Jennifer is the same height as Joy and Joy is the same height as Kate then Jennifer and Kate has the same height.

    Distributive:
    Alex Choi is a famous therapist, and every Wednesday he consults and mother and a daughter. However, one day the daughter and mother came in separately and Dr. Choi gave the same advice. The next they came in and Alex told them the same advice. (Distributing the advice)


    Identity:
    Kevin was playing Starcraft he is given 4 machines at the beginning but he forgot to build more so he still had 4 machines.

    Property of Opposites:
    Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde met each other and Dr. Jekyll decided to kill the evil man but since they are the same person they killed each other.

    Property of Opposite of a Sum:
    Jennifer goes to a store and wants to buy and pencil, but the clerk says that one pencil is 100$. Alex goes to a store to buy a pencil but once again, the clerk says that the pencil is 100$. They go together to buy a pencil but the clerk still says that one pencil is 100$.
